Preserving Wildlife Habitat in Residential Developments

Workshop Description: The objective of this training is to provide built environment professionals with some tools to preserve wildlife habitat and promote wildlife diversity. Many residential developments are situated near wildlife and habitats that sustain wildlife communities. Preserving the unique natural features inherent on every development site benefits wildlife and homeowners. Much of this module is devoted to defining, recognizing, and managing natural communities because of the intricate link between healthy wildlife communities and natural communities. Emphasis will be on residential and small commercial design and management at the community scale.

Who Should Attend: This workshop is designed for Developers, Building Contractors, Professional Engineers, and Landscape Architects.

Credits: The course offers 3 CEUs for all of the groups specified.

Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Course

Workshop Description: What does a Florida Yard Look Like? Florida homeowners seek landscape/build features that protect the natural environment and bring harmony, order, beauty and value into their lives.  This training provides development team planners and advisors FYN guidelines for better site design and management practices for reducing storm-water runoff and conserving water. The 4 hour session will show 'good' landscape design, efficient watering with micro-irrigation and 'new' ways to protect Florida 's waterfront. Participants will perform an FYN yard certification; discuss FYN contacts, available resources and a list of FYN 'model' home and demonstration landscapes. Attendees will learn landscape tools for modeling a resource efficient community that puts the right plant in the right place, waters efficiently, mulches, recycles, uses turf selectively, selects the least toxic pest control measures, fertilizes only when necessary, provides food, water and shelter for wildlife and protects surface and ground water supplies.

ECO DÉCOR: Ecological Design & Decoration

Workshop Description: This course is designed specifically for the role of the interior designer in reference to sustainable (green) design, as well as optimum indoor air quality (IAQ) and environmental quality (IEQ).
     The interior designer can expect to come away with knowledge of sustainability and health practices as an introduction to preferred products (example: paints low in voc (volatile organic compounds) emissions, and techniques for installations reducing pollution.
     A brief overview of LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) will be addressed, as well as directives for introducing green ethics and products into their practices.

Who Should Attend: This course is for Interior Design Professionals and carries ASID CEU Credits.
