Sarasota
County Government 1660 Ringling Blvd. Sarasota, FL 34236 www.scgov.net
Sarasota
County Government is committed to green buildings and is
leading the community by example. The county’s green
building effort began in 1994 with the design/construction
of the Florida House Learning Center, a demonstration home
and landscape. Recent sustainable construction efforts
include the County Judicial Center, which earned
an EPA Energy Star designation, and the building of a residential
chemical waste collection facility to the greenest standard
available. In addition, U.S. Green Building Council LEED-registered
buildings (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
include the Twin Lakes Park Green Office Complex (a
renovated building adjacent to a new building), which is
seeking Gold LEED certification, and the North Sarasota Public
Library, seeking Silver LEED certification. The Board of
County Commissioners passed a resolution in March 2005 encouraging
the use of sustainable building practices in private construction.
Financial incentives, including fast-track permitting and
a 50 percent reduction in the cost of building permit fees
(up to a maximum of $1,000), are offered to private contractors
who build to Florida Green Building Coalition residential
green standards or FGBC/LEED commercial standards (certain
restrictions apply). The resolution also mandates that all
new Sarasota County government buildings be built to green
standards (certain restrictions apply), and that all new
county government buildings must meet LEED Green Building
Rating System standards. The county also established a preference
in its procurement for environmentally preferred products
and services that minimize negative environmental and social
impacts and emphasize long-term values. In an effort
to keep county buildings healthy, a Green Housekeeping Policy
was approved in conjunction with a green janitorial products
bid award. Sarasota
County is building its green fleet and currently owns nine
hybrid vehicles. |
