1:00 PM - 2:00 PM The Original Green — Unlocking the Mystery of True Sustainability
"Gizmo Green" is the idea that by simply choosing better equipment and better materials, we can achieve sustainability. But how do we choose? Nearly every manufacturer out there can tell you why their product is the greenest thing on the market. How can we know which choice is greener? If we're choosing between a more efficient widget and a less efficient widget, that choice seems clear... just spend more money for the more efficient widget. But what if we're choosing between a widget and a gadget? Gizmo Green doesn't help us out so much here. It turns out that there is a better way of choosing. It includes Gizmo Green ideas, but it's much broader than solely Gizmo Green. It's something called the Original Green. During this presentation, we'll first step back and look at what true sustainability actually entails. Once that's established, we'll circle back around and see how these principles help us make material and equipment choices. Some of the answers will be surprising, because they don't always involve spending more money. Rather, because the Original Green is much broader, it gives us more choices that include rearranging things you were going to build anyway. Other Original Green solutions involve things you'd never imagine, like building a series of garden rooms in your yard instead of buying a bunch of equipment. Doing so doesn't just give you the opportunity to raise some of your food just outside your door, but it also can lower your utility bills in ways far more effective than more efficient equipment. Come and find out how!
Speaker: Steve Mouzon, principal, Mouzon Design,  Miami Beach, FL

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Evaluating & Optimizing Existing Building Performance
Improving the energy performance of existing buildings presents both opportunities and challenges. Energy conservation requires investigation and cost-effective solutions related to the building, equipment, operations, and occupant habits. Some energy improvements require minimal costs and offer rapid returns while other energy saving options are considered investments, which must be financed or secured by guaranteed energy savings . This session discusses common residential and commercial building retrofits, their relative costs, leveraging tax incentives, and optimizing for the shortest return on investment.
Speaker: Dr. Jennifer Languell, president, Trifecta Construction Solutions, Fort Myers, FL
